Why Binge Watching Your Favorite Show Is OK Right Now

Do you ever feel guilty for watching ‘too much TV’?

Rest your mind at ease, because right now – you need the escape. Here’s why it’s OK to watch TV—guilt free—this Winter:

Krystine Batcho, PhD, professor of psychology at Le Moyne College in New York has said that remaining isolated or socially distant and relying on activities such as watching TV, eating favorite foods, or gaming aren’t long-term substitutes for actual interactions with other people, during this time of physical distancing, since many traditional ways of connecting aren’t possible, nontraditional means of connecting are a good substitute.

“While we need to socially distance, watching our favorite shows, reading books, and listening to our favorite music can keep us feeling anchored in the life that’s been temporarily suspended,”

I don’t know about you, but I find myself needing an ‘escape from the real world’, and TV often fills that need.

Professor of Neurology at Penn Medicine, Arjan Chatterjee says,

“When watching a show or movie, or reading a book that you just can’t put down, part of that “what happens next?” feeling comes from having put yourself in the role. “You forget about yourself as you’re immersed. With good writing, you are transported away from where you are. You could be on your couch, but you lose track of the physicality of where you are when you’re transported into the story.”

Below is my Top 10 Favorite Shows During Quarantine right now…

1) Dr. Quinn Medicine Woman

[Full Series – 9 Seasons – on Prime Video]

If you’re looking for a wholesome, safe-for-the-entire-family series that pairs perfectly with the holiday season, this series is my #1 all-time-favorite TV series. It hits on real-world issues with a beautiful and positive message in nearly every episode.

2) Poldark

[Full Series – 5 Seasons – on Amazon Prime & PBS Passport]

A British historical drama set in the 1700’s. The series is based on the novels authored by Winston Graham, screenplay written and adapted by Debbie Horsfield. A romantic drama, BEAUTIFULLY filmed and a wonderful escape for the Winter evening. Filled with great romance, action, conflict – definitely captivating!

3) Downton Abbey

[Full Series – 6 Seasons – on Amazon Prime & PBS Passport]

This fictional series is set in Yorkshire Country Estate between 1912 and 1926. An aristocratic Crawley family and their servants in the post-Edwardian era depict events of the time and how their family, and staff manage their lives through personal loss, war and relationships. A great drama that covers a lot of life issues relevant even to today.

4) Call The Midwife

[Full Series – 9 Seasons – on Prime Video, Netflix and PBS Passport]

Another period drama (Can you tell those are my favorite?) set in the East End of London during the late 1950s and 1960s. This series focuses on a group of nurses and midwives, and nuns from Nonnatus House. It’s a beautiful series that covers real-world issues through the eyes of women of all ages. Each episode framework is around the vulnerable moment a woman gives birth. The struggles on the medical side, as well as the women about to give birth, who live in Poplar—one of the poorest communities in East London.

5) Friends

[Full Series – 10 Seasons – on Prime Video, Hulu Premium & HBO Max]

Anyone who grew up in the 80’s and 90’s knows that this series is a light-hearted, very funny, series about a group of friends you’ll quickly fall in love with. There’s a reason this is a cult-favorite, with a strong fanbase. If you need a good laugh, this is the series to watch!

6) Anne With An “E”

[Full Series – 3 Seasons – Netflix & Amazon Prime]

A feel good series about a coming-of-age outsider who fights for acceptance, for her place in the world, and for love. The series begins with her struggles in an orphanage, and desperate need for a place to call her own—a family who will love her. She has a fierce personality, with a wild imagination. In the beginning of the series you may think “Woah!” but that moment she is genuinely accepted – I dare you not to shed a tear. She will soon capture your heart. The entire series is beautifully filmed, and hits all the sides of your heart. The series is based on the classic book from 1908, Anne of Green Gables, written by Lucy Maud Montgomery.

7) Little Women (Masterpiece)

[Full Series – 1 Season – Amazon Prime & PBS Passport]

Set during the Civil War, this story follows the sisters Jo, Meg, Beth, and Amy March, growing up with their father off to war and mother, Marmee, helping them learn what it means to be young women. This story has been told many times, but I find this PBS Masterpiece depiction very well done and easy to love! The series is based on the 1868 novel written by Louisa May Alcott.

8) LOST

[Full Series – 6 Seasons – Amazon Prime & Hulu Premium]

Oooo, if you need a thrilling series that will keep you fully hooked with suspense, this. Is. The. Series. To watch! The last season (especially the ending) isn’t my favorite, HOWEVER, there is a reason Clark and I have re-watched this series twice (I’m not a re-watcher of very many series).

This series is about the passengers of (fictitious) Oceanic Flight 815. Crashing down 1,000 miles off course they work together (and sometimes apart) to keep a sense of community while seeking rescue—all while trying to navigate the dangers of a mysterious island… I promise you – you will not know what’s coming… so entertaining!

9) Stargate (SG1, Atlantis, Universe)

[Full Series – 17 Seasons in Total – Amazon Prime, Netflix, & Hulu]

For my Science Fiction loving friends who love all things space and other-world related, will love this seemingly endless supply of episodes. This is my #1 all-time-favorite space series.

The series is about a group of military explorers and scientists who discover an ancient portal (wormhole) that allows them to travel the universe. They use the Stargate to explore new worlds, create connections with friendly civilizations and protect Earth from hostile ones. This series is based on the Movie ‘Stargate’ that was released in 1994.

10) The Chosen

[Full Series – 1 Season (Season 2 almost finished filming!) – Install The App]

This is a brand new series released in 2020, based on the life of Jesus Christ, written, directed, and created by American filmmaker, Dallas Jenkins. The series portrays Jesus “through the eyes of those who met him”.

This Bible series is unlike any I have ever seen (And there are a lot of Bible films). This is my very favorite depiction of Jesus, who I have connected with in this film like I have never before. This is who I believe Jesus is, how I have always felt Him to be like. I am very impressed by the creators of this series, and I am so grateful to them for [finally] creating ‘My Jesus’ that I’ve always known my entire life! 100% recommend watching this series!

Becky Cooper, Certified Brain Health Coach. Often times we find ourselves in need of support in accomplishing life, health, and mindful goals. It takes a great amount of courage to recognize that you can’t do everything alone— we sometimes need someone to help us be accountable to what we truly desire to accomplish in life.  It has been said that it takes a village to raise a child; I feel it takes a tribe to help raise each other [up]. This is at the heart of what I do. 💚  I have found life to be easier when I accept that I am a 'work in progress', and that's enough. While I continue to learn and progress, taking life one step at a time, I can invite others along my journey and help them too; teaching them what I have learned, and encourage them. In December of 2020 I completed the Brain Health training course directed by Dr. Daniel Amen, graduating with the official certification as an Amen Clinics Certified Brain Health Coach. This not only has helped me learn valuable solutions to help myself heal, but also help others who feel the same way as I do; others who are also in search of healing.Read More...
