Triptych – Inside My Mind – Bipolar Art

This series, called a ‘Triptych’, I have named ‘Inside My Mind‘. It visually illustrates the frame of mind I live in on any given day. Some days it’s a depressive headspace, some days it’s mania/or anxious, or stability. I created this visual trio to help others see what you feel inside when words fail to accurately describe the complexity of emotions & feelings happening all at once.

When you feel overwhelmed/overdone/chaotic or even ’empty’ or numb, it’s so hard to convey to our loved ones, honestly, how it feels. When you try to illustrate in words & they misunderstand, it can make a bad situation worse. So hopefully these visuals can help make better sense of what we see behaviorally on the outside, because this is what it looks like on the inside.

MANIA/ANXIETY (Yellow & Red) – It feels mentally & physically HOT. Like your veins are on fire. This racing intensity surges through the entire body. The mind is racing non-stop w/ what feels like 1,000 ideas, plans, concerns, worries, scenarios, conversations, etc… the heart races & the whole body feels overstimulating. You feel this unrelenting impulsivity to attack projects, to keep moving – to move the body, to talk out your thoughts & feelings, not always realizing you’re not making sense, & the speech is pressured & fast paced. The part of mania I hate is when I’m not always aware of my behavior until the mania lifts…

DEPRESSION (Blue) – The emotions weigh heavy, not just on the mind – but the entire body. Body aches, stomach aches, headaches… sometimes it’s hard to discern between ‘am I sick’ or ‘is my body just depressed’? You know you need to be positive, & you really lean hard on people, hobbies, & routines to keep you afloat (ref: green balloon symbol) & for strength, but the shadows stick. You know there’s hope (the white light symbol). All you can do is look towards the good & positive, & ride out the feelings until they lift.

STABILITY (Sunset) – Noticeably different from Depression or Mania. The mind is quiet & peaceful, like a nice cool breeze is flowing through it, with warm comforting sunshine…

About the author

Becky Cooper, Certified Brain Health Coach.

Often times we find ourselves in need of support in accomplishing life, health, and mindful goals. It takes a great amount of courage to recognize that you can’t do everything alone— we sometimes need someone to help us be accountable to what we truly desire to accomplish in life.  It has been said that it takes a village to raise a child; I feel it takes a tribe to help raise each other [up]. This is at the heart of what I do. 💚  I have found life to be easier when I accept that I am a 'work in progress', and that's enough. While I continue to learn and progress, taking life one step at a time, I can invite others along my journey and help them too; teaching them what I have learned, and encourage them. In December of 2020 I completed the Brain Health training course directed by Dr. Daniel Amen, graduating with the official certification as an Amen Clinics Certified Brain Health Coach. This not only has helped me learn valuable solutions to help myself heal, but also help others who feel the same way as I do; others who are also in search of healing.Read More...
